Double Harmonic Major modes – Lydian ♯2 ♯6

Lydian #2 #6 is the second mode of the Double Harmonic Major scale and is also called Lydian Augmented ♯2 or Hungarian Major. This mode resembles Lydian but features a sharp 2nd and sharp 6th, giving it a bright but synthetic and exotic sound.

Scale formula

The formula for the Lydian #2#6 is:

1 – ♯2 – 3 – ♯4 – 5 – ♯6 – 7

Lydian #2#6 fingering.

Chords

  • Maj7♯5 (e.g., Dmaj7♯5): The mode contains a major 3rd, sharp 5th, and natural 7th — ideal for extended or altered major chords.
  • Maj7♯11: The raised 4th (♯11) is present like in traditional Lydian, making it suitable for this extension.
  • Alt dominant chords (e.g., A7♯5♯9): The scale includes altered tensions and works in fusion settings for dominant resolutions with colour.

Usage

Lydian ♯2 ♯6 is a synthetic-sounding mode that’s highly effective in jazz fusion, progressive rock, and experimental harmony.

The three raised scale degrees — ♯2, ♯4, and ♯6 — create a distinctive, almost otherworldly major tonality. It’s particularly useful over static major chords that don’t resolve traditionally, or when a bright but ambiguous modal colour is desired. It’s rarely found in traditional Western harmony, making it a strong choice for modal improvisation or soundtrack work needing a “floating” feel with an exotic edge.
